Description

In the pre-Civil War days in Memphis, a German immigrant named Jacob Burkle decided he would help slaves who were seeking freedom, and he allowed his home to become a stop on the Underground Railroad. The home is now a heart-wrenching reminder of the horrors of slavery, complete with rare photos, shackles and maps that slaves followed to freedom. Head to the basement for a rare and fascinating glimpse of an intact portion of the Underground Railroad – there are still tunnels that lead from the basement to the safety of the nearby river.
