Memphis Medical District Collaborative

Description

The Memphis Medical District employs more than 16,000 people and has more than 8,000 students. The district is also responsible for more than $1.2 billion dollars in purchasing and procurement. With this in mind, the leadership of some of Memphis' most significant healthcare and higher education institutions, as well as community leaders from the Edge District, Peabody/Vance District and Victorian Village, have launched an organization to direct the future development of the Memphis Medical District. The Memphis Medical District Collaborative (MMDC) is responsible for a series of strategic programs to make the district, more vibrant, economically prosperous, clean, and safe. The MMDC's focus will be primarily focused on four key areas: Improving the public realm and built environment, Coordinating safety and security, Activating programming the District, and Facilitating community development. The MMDC will also institute a series of programs to capture and reinvest some of the institutions' economic impact into future development and programmatic initiatives. Launching a series of programs – Live Local, Buy Local, and Hire Local – Aimed at increasing the number of employees and students living in the District, growing local purchasing of goods and services, and connecting community residents to job opportunities at the institutions.
